Job Description

Overview

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON, Inc.) is a nonprofit science corporation dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land use and invasive species impact ecology. Currently under design is the NEON project - an observatory comprising more than 60 environmental and biological monitoring locations distributed throughout twenty domains across the United States, Hawaii, Alaska & Puerto Rico.  The observatory network will be the first of its kind designed to detect and enable forecasting of ecological change at continental scales over multiple decades.

Summary

Reporting to the CFO, the Logistics Manager will be responsible for developing and managing the logistics, warehouse, transportation and materials inventory systems of NEON encompassing 60+ domain locations across the continental US, Hawaii, Alaska & Puerto Rico.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and administer the transportation of construction materials to/from 60 +remote domain locations/offices. This includes determining the optimal methods of transportation from headquarters and supplier locations to construction sites/domain offices.
  • Manage all in/out bound freight carriers and maintain all shipping/receiving documentation.
  • Develop and manage internal fleet operations as needed to ensure successful movement of 400+ seasonal personnel during annual sampling activities in NEON operations.
  • Manage the logistics of getting equipment to/from field site personnel during annual sampling activities in NEON operations.
  • Design and manage warehouse operations to include annual physical inventory of materials. Maintain warehouse documentation and records.
  • Write and maintain all policies and procedures relating to NEON Logistics department including, but not limited to shipping, receiving, inventory control, physical inventory processes, and warehouse management.
  • Responsible for maintaining logistics budget and reporting on logistics operations to appropriate NEON personnel.

Education

  • Bachelors Degree preferred

Required Experience

  • 8-10 years experience in logistics management to include oversight of transportation of goods; freight carriers; warehouse operations; maintaining documentation in an online logistics/warehouse software system.
  • Previous experience writing policies and procedures.
  • Experience managing minimum 10,000 sq ft warehouse operations including responsible for inventory of materials. Knowledge of warehouse safety protocols and programs.
  • Experience with expediting goods to field operations.
  • 2+ years experience managing personnel.
  • Previous responsibility managing freight and department expenses in excess of $1-$2 million.
  • Must be proficient in MS Office products to include Excel and Word.
  • Previous experience working with an automated warehouse system.
  • Up to 20% travel at times.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience supporting engineers and scientists
  • Experience working in a scientific organization
  • Experience using computerized inventory / erp systems

Skills and Abilities:


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skill
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be detailed oriented.

Physical Abilities:

  • Able to lift 40 pounds.
